Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world. - James 1:27

ASKING FOR HELP  The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inventor of goodness and the giver of all good things.

Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. […]

A MINDSET OF SERVICE
There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of  righteousness that Abraham practices. Then, in his letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to  their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home.  […]

Dear Sacred Heart Community,

My name is Todd Fredrickson, and I was just ordained into the       Permanent Diaconate June 15th of this year. I started my formation process back in 2014, spent four years taking theology classes through Santa Clara University, and five years of formation through the diocese. I spent the one year as a pastoral year serving in my previous parish of Madonna del Sasso and working with VNA & Hospice.

My wife of twenty-seven years, and I converted to the Catholic faith together back in 1999, and have six wonderful children, three of them are still at home. The whole family has been active over the years at Madonna, and have served in RCIA, Youth Group, Young Adult Ministry, Lectoring, Teen Camp, and Catechists.  […]

Beloved Community of Sacred Heart,

I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for these past five years, for your time shared together, your trust, your patience, and for your service dedicated to the growing of the kingdom of God. It is impossible to put into words all the experiences we lived together, but the one thing I am sure of is that in all of you I encountered the face of God, the face of a God who loves and forgives, the face of a God who suffers but always has hope, the face of a God alive in each family and in each individual. I leave very grateful for having finished my mission and for all of your affection and friendship. I will keep you in my heart and in my prayers.

With Immense Gratitude, Sister Rosario

THIS SACRED MEAL

Today we celebrate the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Each of the readings includes a blessing and a sharing of food. They remind us of the central place of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the sharing of cookies and milk, pizza and beer, loaves and fishes, bread and wine. When we prepare a meal for our family, our friends, even strangers, we always put something of ourselves into the preparation and the meal itself. […]

Dear Friends of Sacred Heart Parish,

Words alone cannot express my sense of appreciation to you for allowing me to journey with you over these past months. However, they become a palpable sign of my heartfelt gratitude and love that has grown daily. You are a blessing in my life and, as your priest, serving you has been one of the greatest honors I could possibly ask for.

I have discovered that you are very generous souls. I say this because you have given me a couple of very important things, namely, your time and your heart. On the one hand, you have given me your time; sadly, I could never give it back to you. On the other, you have given me your heart, because it didn’t take much for us to be connected. Hence, I thank you. You inspire me to always move forward in my life; I pray and hope I do the same for you. […]
