As we approach the Lenten season in the liturgical calendar, the church invites us to ponder about who we really are. Scripture teaches us that we are created in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:27). Two truths flow from this statement: first, that God is the Creator; second, that we are his creatures. Simply put, we are not God. We exist because God freely created us out of love. This is who we really are, and yet, how often we forget this fundamental truth.

Lenten practices abound to help us understand this truth. Let me mention a few of them. On Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, our foreheads are marked with ashes reminding us that we are limited creatures. When we die our bodies turn to ashes and dust.
