The Church's deepest nature is expressed in her three-fold responsibility: of proclaiming the word of God, celebrating the sacraments, and exercising the ministry of charity. - Pope Benedict XVI

Last week Bishop Garcia made it official. The new pastor of Sacred Heart … taking up his ministry on June 29 … is …Fr. Ignacio Martinez.

This is very good news for our parish.

Friends of mine who attended Fr. Nacho’s recent farewell as pastor of Soledad parish said there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. I understand this very well. [...]

I have extended an invitation to Rev. Cyrus Gallagher O.F.M. Cap. to come to our parish on the weekend of May 21-22, 2011. Rev. Cyrus Gallagher O.F.M. Cap. will speak to you about the work being done by Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor [...]

Have you noticed that our big debt on Cislini Youth Center (over $1,000,000) finally went down by over $300,000? That’s because Sacred Heart received money from a will. (God bless Dorothy Franci, church secretary here in the days of Msgr. Earley.) This parish has been rescued time and time again because some good-hearted sweetheart thought to provide for Sacred Heart’s on-going vitality in a will or trust [... ]

Our Church led us through 40 days of Lent, to our stunning Holy Week (thanks to all the ministers who helped us celebrate!) … and now we have 7 weeks to bask in Easter glory. What wonderful spiritual food we’ve been feasting on these last days [...]

We’re delighted you joined us for worship and thanksgiving. If you are a non-Catholic on a search, or a non-practicing Catholic returning here at another’s invitation (or insistence), you are especially welcome. For us Christians, this is the Day of Days. Everyone needs God. Should you sense the Holy One calling you from the scriptures, the rituals, the music, the assembly, or private questions or yearnings inside your own heart … the parish and I are so happy to engage you in conversation. Don’t be shy to call and set a time for a visit! Happy Easter to all [...]

Today begins Holy Week. The best way to complete a Lent well observed — or rescue a Lent poorly kept — is to participate in the ceremonies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter. (See the enclosed schedule.) They are breathtakingly beautiful, a real nourishment for the Spirit [...]

As we enter our last week before HOLY WEEK, there are two more large opportunities for confession — communal penance at St. Mary’s on Monday at 6 PM … and communal penance at Madonna del Sasso on Friday at 6 PM. (Please note that there are no Friday 6 PM confessions at Sacred Heart, since Fr. Luis Fernando and I will be over at Madonna del Sasso. These will be the last scheduled confession times before Easter.) [...]

This weekend we’ll hear about a parish fund-raiser called Lenten Liquidation. The brain-child of parishioner John Cailotto (very savvy about living in this computer age), it’s a drive to convert usable large items gathering dust in your garage (computers, refrigerators, TV’s, etc.) into cash to help the parish pay down some of our Cislini Youth Center debt. I hope you’ll listen carefully to this intriguing idea which could do Sacred Heart a world of good. There’s more information in this bulletin [...]

For a long time parishioners have asked more hours of adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament. We began Lent by instituting daily adoration from the end of 7AM Mass till 9:30 AM (except Thursday, when adoration continues until 12:15 PM Mass). This has been well received [...]
