A SUMMARY OF BISHOP GARCIA’S MEMORANDUM REGARDING
FLU AWARENESS AND LITURGICAL CHANGES,
DATED JANUARY 10, 2018:
Last week, we received a letter from Bishop Garcia regarding the flu season, in which he
makes the following reminders and recommendations to reduce the likelihood of the flu’s
spread:
• The sick or those who are not feeling well are never obliged to attend Sunday Mass.
• Those who are at Mass and are not feeling well should avoid shaking hands during
greeting and during the sign of peace.
• Reception of the consecrated host in the hand is preferred to reception on the tongue.
• Those who are at Mass and are not feeling well should avoid receiving the Precious Blood
from the communion cup. Receiving from the cup is always optional. We have already started to implement these changes. They will be lifted when the flu season ends. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation, and please keep our sick brothers
and sisters in your prayers.

From Fr. Manny:

Isn’t it amazing in this scientific and sophisticated age that we are all so interested in stars, horoscope and astrological signs. All of us  are pleased when we read that something spectacular will happen. The Magi’s journey across mountains and deserts, following the star, echoes in our hearts. We feel that we have our own star to follow – a yearning deep down within our being for meaning, truth and happiness, an individual path in life which we alone are called to tread. When the Magi found the child Jesus, it was highly unlikely that they  saw an infant with a halo who was clearly recognizable as the Son of God. I believe they saw just another tiny child because that was all their natural eyes could see. (…)

From Fr. Robby:  As we begin a new year, a common secular tradition has been to make resolutions, with the hope of improving something about ourselves. It seems to me that most people who make resolutions spend the last month of the year thinking about what they want to change, and the first month of the year working toward that goal, while the ten months in between see no change at all. Although I do not make resolutions, I understand why people tend to make them. A new year promises new beginnings and new opportunities. It is a chance to start over again, to improve and be better persons. When we are baptized, we experience a new beginning as well. (…)

SIMBANG GABI
Simbang Gabi is a Filipino Christmas tradition that started around the year 1660. It was
originally a series of nine dawn Masses. The Mass starts as early as 4:00 a.m. It begins on
December 16 and ends on the midnight of the 24th of December, which is the midnight Mass. This
tradition was introduced by the Spanish friars to allow the farmers to hear Mass before going to the
fields early in the morning. Simbang Gabi is also known by its popular Spanish name as the Misa de
Gallo, or “Mass of the Rooster.” …

Happy New Year! Yes, I know it is December. Like our secular culture, the Church also has its own year. During the liturgical year, we celebrate particular mysteries of our faith. We have now begun the first season of the year, Advent, in which we focus on the mystery of the coming of Jesus Christ, both his first coming and his second coming (the word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, meaning coming). Advent is a time of waiting and expectation. It has a two-fold character: it is a time of preparation for Christmas, in which the first coming of Jesus into our world is +remembered, and it is also a time when we look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time. …
